RECOMMENDED BY HUMANS
The best recommendations come from real humans.
How do you find a TV show you know you’ll love? You could rely on a recommendation algorithm designed to suggest titles based on your viewing history. But just because you watched one British detective drama, it doesn’t mean you want to watch Every. Single. British. Detective. Drama. (There’s a lot). Algorithms don’t understand the nuanced reasons we love the shows we watch.
Because algorithms don’t watch TV. Humans do.
HBO’s Recommended by Humans campaign created the world’s first human-powered recommendation engine, bringing together long-form testimonial videos, paid and organic social content, and fan participation across the internet.
The Recommendations
To kick off the campaign, we had real people sit down with award-winning documentarian Alison Klayman to answer one simple question: What HBO show do you recommend and why? What we got were 36 honest, emotional, and sometimes hilarious recommendations for the entire HBO library, from cult favorites to prestige dramas.
Also we interviewed a dog, which was fun.
The Tool
On humanreco.com, we compiled our video recommendations in an easy-to-use tool designed to help you find your next favorite show. To keep the content fresh, we pulled tweets from fans using #humanreco, spreading HBO love across the internet.
Clicking on any recommendation offers the show pilot, free of charge.
Press
We got a lot of press for being the first major streaming platform to recognize the shortcomings of algorithms and data.
